I am going to get both, but which should I get first. I really don't know! Headers will give a 10 to 15 hp or so, which is pretty good(some people got 20!), and it will sound amazing!
Wheels on the other hand, will make the car have better grip(wider wheels), they will loose a bit of unsprung weight(about 1.3lbs per corner) and they look hella sexy. HELLA!!!!!

Do you like to be seen or heard better? By all the eargasm vids you post I think you might enjoy the headers more. :)

New rubber. Not just a performance upgrade but a safety upgrade
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:03 |

Always improve the handling of the car before you beef up the performance. I learned that the hard way (RIP '97 T-Bird).

I'm a huge proponent for Handling over Power. You can have all the power in the world but unless you have the right handling (in this case, wheels or rubber) than it won't count for shit. Have fun!

Yeah, but I really really like the wheels. Plus it will make me so much faster at autocross(I like to blame the tires for the lack of speed). But the headers really make the car sound amazing. I never thought I would be able to have a car that sounded great until I was 30-40ish.

Headers, I want a fair fight if I ever cross paths with you.
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:10 |

If you're still on stock tires, do the wheels.
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:10 |

You won't even stand a chance. All 225 hp will lay you out! LAY YOU OUT!!
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:11 |

Yup still on stock tires, I learned today how much they suck in the cold+wet... too little grip. I would easy onto the gas and it would start to spin the rears at 3K -_-
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:12 |

Exhaust.
Do forged TE37s later :D
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:12 |

This is for sure true. I have unwillingly spun the rears, without even trying.

Ha! Do you think your FRS style can defeat me? En garde, I'll let you try my 328i style!

Wheels.
Use stickers for the extra hp. Some honda dudes told me you get an extra 30hp!
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:15 |
|
But they are so expensive!! :( Plus they don't look as good as the 57xtremes, which are the "budget" rays and even they are pushing my wallet. . .
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:16 |
|
Psh, I HAVE PERRIN STICKERS! On my video game box, which gives my car 5 hp rather than the desired 20hp. For a total of 4000hp.
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:17 |
|
True, true. Plus the headers give more torque, which will make the car even more tail happy.

But I have a BMW and therefore it is
To beat me!!!

It's a tough call... I just erased what I was saying a couple of times determining. To be honest, if you're only doing headers, then I'd get wheels/tires. The small bump in HP from just headers will not be as big a difference as wheels will make.
While the car certainly needs more power, you'd need more like 30-50 to make it more worth the bump.

BMW badge = 7.4 x 10^26hp

if your going to do both, do the wheels. What do you have in mind?

![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:24 |

Yes, you are correct BMW badge is greater than 9000hp.
Meanwhile a Scion badge is worth -
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:24 |

Well with a full exhaust system, the car makes about 15 to 30hp. So it is good lump of power(for 200hp atleast).
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:27 |

This is true and never a bad thing!
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:29 |

Show before go, or go before show? I went with exhaust first on my mustang because it was cheaper. I also plastidipped my rims and got the quasi rim look. Ultimately it comes down to what you want more. I'd say go with wheels because I think it'd make a way bigger difference in presentation than the sound/performance of headers would
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:29 |

Used set.
I can't fathom paying new prices unless I'm Mr. Burns.
The 'affordable' new ones are those HRE flow form rims. I think those look smashing, but even 3k has broken and destroyed my bank account.
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:29 |

Ray's Gram Lights 57xtreme. They are like "cheap" version of Volks instead of costing 2.5K plus. These are under 2k(1700 to 1800). So basically it will leave me poor and wont be able to get some headers until summer(after coilovers if I get the wheels first).
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:30 |
|
Oh you're debating a full exhaust? Then it is almost more worth it to do that, though you may start having more troubles putting it down still. Really, once you're in motion, the stock wheels should still be able to handle that extra 30hp if you can get that much.
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:31 |
|
My advice would be wheels/tires and then exhaust/intake but then you will need a re-mapping of the computer for the engine to realize the potential of the the headers/intake, it is the cheapest of the mods and the most bang for your buck. (sell a piece of gold and you will be good to go). :)
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:32 |

I don't know but, but I fuck with wheels. I'm so excited because when the Miata needs new tires, I'm going to upgrade from the stock 185/60R14 to 205/50R15 (that's official Spec Miata size btw). Which means—wheel choosing time!
Paired with the right rubber this car is going to handle sooo well.
/pent-up fantasy
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:33 |

How much will those run? I have seen them go from 1600 to 2200, which is about the same for a new set of 57xtremes(1800). Either way, I won't be able to eat for about 2 months.
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:36 |
|
That is what I have heard, but right now there is two options and one isn't that good, and the other only allows you switch to a different program easily. Apparently the stock ECU learns the mods. . . but that is a lie, it barely learns if at all.
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:38 |
|
That is my thoughts. The car has such a good chassis, and tires are sooo crappy for the chassis it has. The wheels are also too small. So what wheels are you looking at?
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:42 |
|
I've mostly been drooling over the prospect of each tire being 2cm wider. Haven't started looking at wheels (it's worth mentioning the rubber on the car right now is only a couple months old, so this upgrade won't be for a while).
In terms of performance, I hate to give up the stock wheels. They're only ~10.4 lbs each. Finding something in 15" that will at least match stock weight could be tricky without spending tons of money.
I do like the Hayashi Street/Rota Shakotan look a lot... Not sure how this would look at stock height though.

I'd say 1500-2k is a nice estimate for a used set.
The problem is how well they keep their value (sometimes artificially so)
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:44 |
|
You never know. My car has 17 inches and are wider than your wheels, and most aftermarket wheels are actually lighter.
![]() 10/15/2013 at 22:47 |

Interesting, they are forged and a lot lighter than the 57xtremes(even if they aren't as sexy). I will have to keep this in mind.

For something similar to those above, BBS CH-Rs? I'm unaware of the market on those however as they always seem very popular.

Because monies.
Otherwise, I would have both on my car right now. I only have funds for one :'(
But soon, I shall have both.

Oh wow. These are damn sexy. Now if only they made it in my bolt pattern for the size I want.
![]() 10/15/2013 at 23:05 |

I would say headers now and wheels when you need a new set of tires. That way you aren't discarding a perfectly good set of tires.
![]() 10/15/2013 at 23:22 |

The larger the more hp correct?
![]() 10/15/2013 at 23:22 |

Woah, what happened? How much power did you put into that car?
![]() 10/15/2013 at 23:35 |

I approve.
Also... I say wheels. Handling first. Power later.
Unless you're making a drift car, then it's the other way around.
![]() 10/16/2013 at 00:10 |

The funny thing is, not a lot. The stock wheels on an MN-12 T-Bird were just that bad. I had pretty much the same choice as you did. Long story short, I chose to install a full exhaust system including headers because it was the cheaper option. I was testing out the exhaust system when I took a corner way too fast, spun out of control and hit a tree.
The FR-S has the same problem that my T-Bird did: skinny tires. They're good for drifting, but if you're used to wide grippy tires you can find yourself in a lot of trouble in a hurry.

mmmm damn dude, it seems to me like the start of a clean, well done fun drivers car, congrats buddy :]
![]() 10/16/2013 at 00:21 |

That seems to be the consensus here. So by the end of december I shall purchase my new wheels! Mine will be black and look like this(they won't be as wide though).

This is why I'm not buying any hardware until I've bought a Cobb Accessport.
![]() 10/16/2013 at 01:57 |
|
I would buy the mods first, and then tune it for the mods. Unless of course you get free tunes after you buy the initial package, then you can do whatever you want.
![]() 10/16/2013 at 10:26 |
|
Not as wide?! Plan ahead and get 12" wide for the rear to fit 335 wide tires. You'll be back in the same place next year when your car has 800HP.
![]() 10/16/2013 at 10:39 |
|
It comes with tunes, even for stock internals. Buying hardware without a ECU reflash on a turbo is totally useless.
![]() 10/16/2013 at 10:43 |

Headers.
I don't know where you live, but road salt season is about to begin. If you buy wheels now, they're either going to take a thrashing this winter, or you get to look at them in your garage all winter and not on your car(that is, if you drive it during the winter).
![]() 10/16/2013 at 21:22 |

oh yea man. And if you add a big azz wing you get hella hp gains
